Loam Bio, Tackling Climate Change One Fungi at a Time
Jan. 19, 2022 by Mitra Pezeshki
Loam Bio is tackling the climate crisis through researching and deploying mycorrhizal fungi, organisms with great carbon sequestration abilities.
These fungi are far-reaching – producing a network of filaments that, globally, spans more than 450 quadrillion km in just the top 10cm of soil. This is “about half the width of our galaxy.” Underground ecosystems that fungi inhabit store 75% of terrestrial carbon. Every year, at least 5 billion tons of CO2 are sequestered within these fungal networks.
“Mycorrhizal fungal networks have long sustained and enriched life on our planet. It’s time they receive the attention they deserve.” Loam Bio is doing just this.
